A dilemma forrása részint az, hogy mivel a MI adatbázisokban tárolt képi adatokból építkezik, automatikusan megörökli a beléjük – korábbi adatgyujtési paradigmák hatására – már belekódolt részrehajlásokat, torzulásokat², amelyek problematikus társadalmi hatásainak ellensúlyozására napjainkban mozgalmak alakulnak³. Másrészt a MI a mesterségesen létrehozott képeken keresztül egyben generálni is képes az emlékezetet, ami a memory studies és az emlékezetpolitika tekintetében is egyaránt figyelemre méltó, ugyanakkor aggodalomra is okot adó fejlemény.

A fentiekbol adódóan felvetodik a kérdés, hogy egyéni és közösségi emlékképeinket hosszú távon milyen mértékben segítik majd elohívni, megjeleníteni, vagy éppen elfedni, eltorzítani a MI által generált képek.

A jelenleg elérheto MI-alapú képgeneráló alkalmazások többsége text to image alapon muködik, tehát egy a felhasználó által megadott rövid szöveges képleírást értelmezve állítanak elo új képeket. A részben a JPhotoarchive.org archívumhoz kötodo személyekkel készített interjúk (a zsidó identitás témájával foglalkozó szerzok, felhasználók) személyes, identitásukat meghatározó engrammákat tárnak fel, melyek szöveges információiból a Midjourney MI alkalmazás generált fényképeket.

A dilemma kifejtését és a videómu narratíváját egyrészt az MI által létrehozott és az archívumból átemelt, valós képek keveredése, másrészt az interjúk hangsávja együttesen alakítja.

The piece focuses on the problematic relationship between memory and image along the question: what will happen if the archives, therefore the memory and history in a broader sense will be shaped, written and rewritten by AI?

The source of the dilemma on one hand it is that since AI works from picture data stored in databases, automatically inherits all the biases and distortions that are coded in them due to previous data harvesting paradigms , the resulting problematic social effects of which (e.g., inherent racism) are now being countered by movements . On the other hand AI is also able to generate the memory, which is a remarkable, meanwhile worrying development in the context of both memory studies and memory politics.

Due to the above we can raise the question: to what extent our individual and collective memory will be evoked, displayed or even distorted in the long term by AI’s image-generating capabilities.

Currently, available AI image generator applications are text-to-image based, i.e., AI generates new pictures, drawing from images in its database by interpreting textual image descriptions given by the user. These descriptions were based on interviews with people partially connected to the JPhotoarchive.org (authors and users dealing with the topic of Jewish identity) revealing personal engrams defining their identity that were transformed into synthetic images by Midjourney AI image generator.

The dilemma and narrative of the video is being articulated by the combination of AI generated images with real photos taken from the archive, and the audio track of the interviews themselves.
