Máté Csanda: Flügelspannweite und Projektionsfläche: Ideologie und Leibhaftigkeit: Szabolcs KissPál: The Rise of the Fallen Feather (2016) – ein Annäherungsversuch (Acta Ethnologica Danubiana 22, 2020)

Abstract: This study examines the artist Szabolcs Kiss Pál’s The Rise of the Fallen Feather docufiction video through close reading. Using this work of art, it examines the deep structures of (ethnic) nationalism and the possibility of artistic reflection hereof. The video’s main motif is the Turul bird and the po- litical myths that were formed around it, the gradual ideological contamina- tion and expropriation of the emblem by the Hungarian far-right – especially during the interbellum. The author thoroughly analyses the dramaturgical structure of the video which is composed of montages, as well as the narra- tive processes, the essentially fairy-tale-type weaving, focussing primarily on the complex interactions between fiction and reality – along with their subversive, emancipatory potential.
